While enjoying my glorious summer vacation I've been mostly doing yard work. Not the pull a few weeds along the sidewalk kind of yard work, the swing a pick axe kind.
It is surprisingly satisfying. Each day I bundle up with socks over my pants legs, wide brim hat, ice water bottle and lots of insect repellent sprayed on my ankles. It's been in the high 90's here in Virginia, with at least 90% humidity. Most nights I pull off a few ticks that somehow found their way in through all the layers of clothes. I wash my mud-crusted, smelly clothes every night, primarily to skeedaddle the bugs. Each morning I suit up again.
This has made me incredibly sore in most of my joints. Although I follow the shade around the yard during the day I'm getting tan on my face, which I don't like at all. My windows are cleaner, my cat and dog have less shaggy fur and the birds are twittering with happiness at the four bird feeders they now visit.
It's going to be really hard to work inside school buildings come fall. I'll have to drive between schools with the windows wide open.
